How to save Lovable credits: 12 tips that work in 2026

Updated · 8 min read

The short answer

  • Start from a finished template instead of a blank prompt, so you don't pay for dozens of design fixes.
  • Plan in Chat (a fraction of a credit) before you build; Build mode is priced by complexity.
  • Change wording with inline text edits: up to 100 a day are free.
  • Revert to an earlier version instead of asking Lovable to fix a broken change.
  • Edit code outside Lovable and push it through the two-way GitHub sync.

Lovable credits rarely run out because of one big prompt. They run out in the long tail: the twenty small follow-ups to fix spacing, colours, the mobile menu and the copy after the first version looks almost right. The tips below cut that tail. Every fact about pricing was checked against Lovable's own documentation on 12 October 2026; Lovable changes pricing often, so check there if a number looks different.

How Lovable credits work (the short version)

One credit balance covers building, chatting, hosting and your app's backend. What a message costs depends on the mode:

What you doWhat it costs
Build mode messageVariable, priced by complexity and work done
Plan mode message1 credit, plus any research Lovable runs
Chat mode messageUsually a fraction of a credit, from a daily chat allowance first
Inline text edit (preview toolbar)Free, up to 100 per account every 24 hours
Creating, updating, accepting or deleting a draftFree
A request you stop before anything changesFree

Lovable's own examples of Build mode costs: making a button grey ≈ 0.50 credits, removing a footer ≈ 0.90, adding authentication ≈ 1.20, and a landing page with generated images ≈ 2.00. So the first build of a page is cheap. The expensive part is everything you ask for afterwards.

12 ways to spend fewer Lovable credits

1. Start from a finished template, not a blank prompt

A blank prompt gives you a generic first draft, then you pay for every fix to make it look professional. Starting from a designed, tested project skips that whole phase: layout, responsive breakpoints, animations and accessibility are already done, so your credits go on your own content and features. Our Lovable templates are built on Lovable's stack (Vite, React, TypeScript, Tailwind) and include a PRD so one prompt rebrands the page.

2. Write a short PRD before your first prompt

Most wasted credits come from discovering what you want halfway through. Write down your product name, audience, the sections you need and your colours before you open Lovable, then paste it in one go. Every template we sell includes a fill-in docs/PRD.md for exactly this.

3. Think in Chat, build in Build mode

Use Chat mode for questions and exploring ideas: chat messages usually cost a fraction of a credit and come out of a daily chat allowance first. Use Plan mode (1 credit per message) when you want Lovable to lay out a bigger change before it touches code. Switch to Build mode only when you know what you want.

4. Use free inline text edits for wording

In the preview toolbar, Edit text inline lets you change headlines, labels and typos directly on the page. Each account gets 100 free inline edits, and each one becomes available again 24 hours after use. Don't spend a Build message on changing a word.

5. Be specific: name the section, the element and the change

"Make the hero better" invites a big, expensive rewrite and a follow-up to undo half of it. "In the hero, make the headline 20% smaller and change the button text to Start free" is cheap and lands the first time. Lovable's docs note that smaller, focused edits generally cost less than larger changes.

6. Revert instead of asking for a fix

If a change broke something, go back to the previous version rather than asking Lovable to repair it. Lovable's FAQ recommends exactly this. A fix-on-a-fix is how one bad prompt turns into ten.

7. Use "Try to fix" once or twice, then investigate

Your account gets 10 free Try to fix uses; each comes back 24 hours after you use it. If an error survives one or two attempts, stop and switch to Chat or Plan mode to understand the cause before changing more code.

8. Stop a request the moment it goes wrong

Stopped Build requests are charged only for work already completed, and a request you stop before Lovable has changed anything isn't charged at all. If you see it heading the wrong way, stop it.

9. Experiment in drafts

Creating, updating, accepting and deleting a draft costs nothing. Building inside a draft costs the same as normal, but you can throw away a failed experiment without paying again to undo it in your main version.

10. Make repetitive code changes outside Lovable

Lovable's GitHub sync is two-way: changes pushed to the connected repository's active branch (usually main) sync back into Lovable. Renaming things across many files, replacing copy or tweaking config is faster in Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code or even GitHub's web editor, and those edits aren't Lovable messages.

11. Use your daily credits every day

Every plan includes daily build credits (5 a day) that refresh at 00:00 UTC and expire at the end of the day. Lovable spends usage-specific and soon-to-expire credits first, so small daily tasks effectively come out of credits you'd otherwise lose.

12. Check what each message really cost

Open the More options menu on any Lovable response and look at Credits used, or review usage in Workspace settings → Plans & credit usage. A week of checking shows you which kinds of request are expensive for your project.

Do Lovable credits roll over?

  • Monthly plan credits roll over while your subscription is active, and expire 2 months after they're issued on monthly plans (1 month after the annual period ends on annual plans).
  • Daily credits expire at the end of the day.
  • Top-up credits (Pro and Business) expire 12 months after purchase. On Pro, top-ups cost $15 per 50 credits.

Why a template saves the most credits

Tips 2–12 make each message cheaper. A template removes most of the messages. The first build of a landing page is only a couple of credits; the real cost is the iteration to make it look and behave like a finished product. With a template, that work is already done and tested, and the included AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md tell Lovable's AI how the design works so later edits stay on-style.

  1. Pick a template and try its live preview.
  2. Create a Lovable project and connect it to GitHub (Lovable makes a new repository).
  3. Push the template's files into that repository; the two-way sync brings them into Lovable.
  4. Fill in docs/PRD.md and send prompt #1 from PROMPTS.md to rebrand the whole page.

The download's START-HERE.md walks through each step. See all Lovable templates, or browse every template.

FAQ

How many credits does a Lovable message cost?

It depends on the mode. Build mode is priced by complexity (Lovable's examples range from about 0.50 credits for a colour change to about 2.00 for a landing page with generated images). Plan mode is 1 credit per message plus any research. Chat messages usually cost a fraction of a credit.

Do Lovable credits roll over?

Monthly plan credits roll over while you're subscribed and expire 2 months after issue on monthly plans. Daily credits expire at the end of each day, and top-up credits expire 12 months after purchase.

Is Lovable's Visual Edit free?

Inline text edits are free up to 100 per account, with each edit available again 24 hours after use. Selecting elements or drawing annotations in the preview toolbar is charged as normal build usage.

Does fixing errors in Lovable cost credits?

You get 10 free Try to fix uses, each restored 24 hours after use. After that, fixes use credits. Reverting to an earlier version is often cheaper than asking for a fix.

Can I edit Lovable code without spending credits?

Yes. Connect your project to GitHub. The sync is two-way, so code you change in Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code or on GitHub and push to the active branch appears in Lovable without sending a Lovable message.
